William Thomson was a commoner of Queen's, taberdar, 1840; Tutor and Provost, 1855. He was chaplain to Queen Victoria in 1859, Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol, Archbishop of York in 1862. The artist studied under William Walter Ouless. This painting is a close copy of the Ouless at Bishopthorpe Palace, York.
