William Pryce was a surgeon, mineralogist and antiquary. This portrait was engraved for his 'Mineralogia Cornubiensis' (1778) by James Basire (1730–1802).

A certain itinerant William Clifford (fl. 1761–1774) was in the right part of Cornwall at the right time to be a possible candidate for the artist (although there is no evidence so far that he painted), but there are no other men surnamed 'Clifford' of which that is true.
