This painting is a variation of John Hoppner's full-length portrait of Pitt at Cowdray Park (1805), which was at the centre of a thriving market for portrait reproductions after his death the following year. According to Lord Normanby who had seen Pitt sit for the original portrait: 'then came applications from the most intimate friends of the deceased statesman for copies … After that I know copies of copies were multiplied to any that wished them' (Walker, 'Portraits', Vol. ii). A number of artists were known to have been employed by Hoppner as copyists, including John Rising. Pitt was one of the greatest statesmen to have held office in British Government and whose premiership spanned a crucial period in European history, including the French Revolution and the early part of the Napoleonic wars.
