William Pitt is the youngest person to serve as British Prime Minister. He was appointed aged only 24, having previously served as Chancellor of the Exchequer. He had a long and distinguished political career. This was during a time of great political upheaval in Europe, while the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars were taking place.

Pitt sat for Gainsborough in 1787, towards the end of the artist’s life. Although this painting of Pitt has been long associated with Gainsborough, it is unlike the 1787 portrait. Although clearly influenced by Gainsborough, this work is not by him.
