William Linskill was the eldest son of William Linskill of Tynemouth Lodge. He became the first Mayor of the newly incorporated borough of Tynemouth in 1849. In December that year a public dinner was given in his honour in the Commercial Hotel, North Shields, 'in gratitude for his exertion for the emancipation of the commerce of the Tyne.' This refers to the setting up of the Tyne Commission, which had a significant impact on the economy of North Shields and is also noted in relation to Chevalier Brightman, whose portrait is part of the Collection. The Linskill name appears frequently in North Tyneside, including in the names of streets and a community facility in a former school.
