Kenrick became a member of the School of Art committee on Birmingham City Council in 1874 and Chairman in 1883, a post he held until 1911. He was active in local politics and the MP for Birmingham North (1885–1899).

The 1941 obituary of Edward Samuel Harper mentions that he painted a number of his friends and colleagues, including William Kenrick and Frank Jackson.
