The over life-size equestrian statue is set on a pedestal with a moulded plinth and cornice. The king’s hair is tied with a loose ribbon. A windswept cloak covers his short Roman tunic. Beneath is a skirt of hanging leather straps (pteruges) and he is seated on a fringed saddle cloth. Unarmed, and without body armour (a cuirass), he carries a baton in his extended right hand and the reins in his left hand. He wears sandals and there are no stirrups. The horse is set on three legs with the front right leg raised. Altogether there is an appearance of naturalness and free movement about William III.
