This portrait is of William Hutton, who was a leading geologist of his day and a Fellow of the Geological Society. In 1832 he published, together with Professor John Lindley, "The Fossil Flora of Great Britain; or Figures and Descriptions of the Vegetable Remains Found in a Fossil State in This Country, vol.2 no. IX", which a contemporary review described as "an important contribution to the science of British, and, indeed, of universal geology.
