William Hathaway Davis, DSO, MC, MA, was appointed Headmaster of William Ellis School in July 1919. Born in 1881, he was educated at Hymers College in Hull. An historian, he graduated with a BA from Yorkshire College (later Leeds University) in 1903, and MA in 1904. Commissioned Temporary Lieutenant 11th (Service) Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in late 1914, he served from June 1916 in France with the 124th Company Machine Gun Corps. He was awarded the Military Cross for actions at the Battle of the Transloy Ridges (Somme). Known as 'The Boss' by the boys, he helped William Ellis School re-establish itself after the disruptions of the war years. Davis introduced the prefect system in early 1920 and his effective leadership led to the school being placed in the group of London schools of advanced standing.
