William Hathaway Davis, DSO, MC, MA, was appointed Headmaster of William Ellis School in July 1919. Born in 1881, he was educated at Hymers College in Hull. An historian, he graduated with a BA from Yorkshire College (later Leeds University) in 1903, and MA in 1904. Commissioned Temporary Lieutenant 11th (Service) Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in late 1914, he served from June 1916 in France with the 124th Company Machine Gun Corps.
