Reuben Chappell was born and brought up in Goole, an inland port in the East Riding of Yorkshire which sits on the confluence of the River Don and the River Ouse. His paintings of the ships which came though the port are part of the folk tradition in art. Later in life Chappell moved to Cornwall where he continued to work as a marine artist.
