The arches are one of two steel complex torsion structures built in 2003 designed by architects MacCormac Jamieson Pritchard. The pair of Whittle Arches rise in front of the statue and divide to end at opposite the edges of Millennium Square, symbolic of the vapour trails of jet planes (the other structure is called 'The Glass Bridge'). The arches are designed with steel panels on top and mesh underneath, so that the structure is revealed, the arches are internally lit at night.
