Born in Cambridge, Wilkinson was a leading marine artist at the outbreak of the First World War and saw active service with the Navy. This led him to found the Dazzle Department at the Royal Academy, inventing a radical ship camouflage of striking patterns in stripes and diamonds to confuse the enemy of size, speed and direction of vessel. However, it is for his posters, using strong colours strengthened by black and featuring the product as part of a broader landscape, that Wilkinson displayed the highest artistic talent. His watercolour and oil paintings can be found in many public and private collections including the Ulster Museum.
