The painting here represents a development of the themes that Lowery has been interested in for several years. It is an exploration of the light and form of the Dorset harbour town of West Bay and reflects the artist's continuing fascination with the port. He has written of his being "attracted by the unexpected and elusive nature of the place, the diminutive cliffs or E. S. Prior’s striking and outsize apartment block, the white mast, the pink house built on the shingle - there seemed to be an equation on offer and one that called for some kind of acknowledgement." In this painting we feel the essence of the place, the quality of light and colour and the geometry of man-made structures. Rather than reducing the possibilities this rather seems to open them up, suggesting the bare bones into which we can feed our own imagination or memories.
