Wesley Stoker Barker Woolhouse was an actuary, mathematician, designer, writer and musical theorist, and Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. Born in North Shields, at the age of 13 he won a national mathematics competition, competing against adults. He was Deputy Secretary of the Nautical Almanac (1830–1837) and in 1844 became the editor of 'The Lady's and Gentleman's Diary', continuing in that role until 1865.
