The Wellington Arch (formerly listed under GV Constitution Hill) comprises a single archway flanked by coupled fluted Corinthian columns and pilasters, with a heavy cornice. Sculptured plaques are surmounted by a bronze group of winged Victory in a chariot drawn by four horses, which was designed by Adrian Jones and placed in this position in 1912. An elaborately decorated chariot, pulled by four rearing horses, is driven by a boy wearing a loincloth. Within the chariot are cannons, flags and other symbols of war. A winged figure of Peace is represented in the act of descending on to it, holding out a laurel wreath in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The sculptor referred to her alighting on the chariot of war, as ‘changing the nature of the equipage and so causing the charioteer to rein in his horses’.
