The plaque is set into the fireplace in the Georgian Room at the Royal Institution. The fireplace comes from the Council Room of the home of Sir Joseph Banks at 32 Soho Square, where the original founders of the Royal Institution met. When the house was being demolished, the Royal Institution benefactor and industrialist Sir Robert Hadfield purchased the fireplace and determined to find a new scientific institution for it.
