During the Second World War Colquhoun had served in the Royal Army Medical Corps but was invalided out in February 1941. He had hoped to be commissioned as an official war artist, and did eventually receive a commission in 1944 to produce a work on the theme of production and transport on the Home Front. Although based on drawings undertaken in the Hebrides, this painting featured a factory in Pebbles.
