Very little known about the artist, save that he was a landscapist and member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, exhibiting there between 1922 and 1930. He was also associated with the School of Art on St Margaret Street in Birmingham.

Whilst the painting has the appearance of a natural landscape, signs within the scene betray the influence of man and the small copse of old trees in the middle ground gives an idea of what the landscape would have looked like before it was cultivated for grazing.
