The lion reclines on a plinth at the top of a shallow curve of a few steps with a solid screen of six Corinthian columns behind. This screen and lion form the exterior of a war memorial, the interior of which is a grand circular chamber entered from the Cowdray Hall and the Art Gallery. This chamber is the Hall of Remembrance, which the lion is intended to 'guard'. The loss of 10,000 Gordon Highlanders (mainly from the North-East) during the First World War led to calls for a cenotaph in Aberdeen. The wall of the Hall has 5042 names of fallen soldiers.
