Comper had been employed by the vicar of St John the Baptist Lound, Booth Lynes – at Lynes’ own expense – to decorate the church from 1912–1914. As a result of Comper’s work Lound is known as the ‘golden church’ with a richly gilded rood loft screen, framing the altar, a Fra Angelico inspired reredos above the Lady altar, the fantastic tall font cover and exuberant organ casing. Comper also designed the large painted St Christopher which greets the visitor, including a self-portrait with his wife in their open-top Rolls Royce. After the war he added the moving half life-size image of Christ crucified besides the south porch to serve as the village’s war memorial.
