A granite obelisk on a three-stepped plinth and set of square steps located on the seafront. Each side of the plinth has large bronze reliefs depicting allegories of Victory, Grief, and Justice. There are also four smaller reliefs of servicemen. The south side represents '1914 – The Outbreak of War'. Britannia is at the centre with soldiers, munitions workers leaving their wives and children. The north side represents '1918 – The End of the War'. The central figure symbolises Peace with war-stained soldiers and civilians either side. On both the East and West sides are two single figures guarding the inscription 'In Memory of our Glorious Dead'. They represent the chief branches of the services – Infantryman, Gunner, Bluejacket, and Airman.
