The monument is on a base of three stone steps on which there is a plinth in the form of an octagon. From the plinth rises an octagonal shaft carved with eight angel heads above a band of foliage and ribbon which is surmounted by a crucifix under a finely moulded hood. The memorial commemorates those from the town who died in the First World War in active service, later supplemented by the names of those who died in action during the Second World War. It was renovated in 1969, when all the names of the fallen were inscribed in polished granite tablets and placed over the original inscriptions around the memorial's base.
