In a much more dramatic painting than traditional horse portraits, Ward depicts 'Walton' having thrown his rider, but starting back from his stable door. Ward produced three paintings of 'Walton', who had won 15 races between 1803 and 1806 and become a famous stallion. His more standard profile portrait was reproduced as a print. This more unusual version, some parts of which such as the stable door were reworked by Ward, was bought by a Mr Theobald at Ward’s sale in 1829. Part of its appeal may have been that 'Walton' was the grandsire of 'Mameluke', one of the most successful stallions in John Theobald’s stud. It came to Brodsworth Hall in the 1860s with several paintings inherited by Georgiana Thellusson, née Theobald. It hangs in the Billiard Room with Ward’s 'Dr Syntax', 'Haphazard', and his portrait of John Theobald and 'Rockingham'.
