Walter Charleton (1619–1707) served as physician to both Charles I and Charles II. He was appointed physician-in-ordinary to the King in Exile, an honour he retained after the Restoration. He was one of the original fellows at the Royal Society. A contemporary of Charleton’s described him as, ‘a learned and an unhappy man, aged and grave, yet too much given to romances’.
