This work shows Vaughan’s interest in the relationship between abstract and figurative painting. It also demonstrates the influence of European painters on the development of his work. Vaughan had been greatly impressed by the 1945 exhibition of works by Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
