A two-stepped base provides the foundation for a pillar-shaped cenotaph, which gradually diminishes in width, its 'shoulders' reminiscent of Islamic design principles, until being eventually topped by a carving of an urn and flame. On each side of the rectangular pillar are circular reliefs. On the south-eastern face relief is a depiction of a soldier’s goodbye to his family, the north-eastern showing a soldier carrying an injured colleague. The other two reliefs depict the two main industries of the town, these being steelmaking and mining. Above two of the reliefs are carved depictions of the badges of the Border Regiment and the Royal Artillery, and on the other two faces sit the coats of arms of the County of Cumberland and Workington Borough Council.
