The artist was chiefly a painter of seascapes. His early training as a sailor no doubt influenced this, but his interests turned to painting and he was taught by Eugène Isabey. The artist combined both talents when he served as an artist on the mission to recover Napoleon’s ashes from St Helena in 1840. A bill from Durnad-Brager to Joséphine Bowes’s dealer Lepature dated 18 January 1867 describes this picture as ‘un tableau sur bois Vue de Trebizonde'. It was therefore thought to be a view of the harbour and fortress at Trabzon, in Turkey, formerly known as Trapezunt, and long known as Trebizond. However, it has been suggested that the painting may in fact represent the town of Sinop, also on the Black Sea.
