The scene is set on Wimbledon Common and, in the Royal Academy catalogue for 1866, the artist listed the portraits. The full-length figures in the foreground have been identified as Mr Edward Ross; Lieutenant-Colonel Halford; Lieutenant-Colonel Lord Elcho; Captain Drake; Captain Heaton; and Captain Horatio Ross – although it is unclear which figure is which. The other individuals depicted are documented as Hon. W. Colville; Mr Martin R. Smith; Mr Stewart Pixley; and the figure the London Scottish uniform is possibly Captain George Mackenzie.
