Garnet Joseph Wolseley, 1st Viscount Wolseley, is shown in field marshal`s uniform, with a baton in his right hand and mounted on a stationary horse. The sculpture was cast from guns captured during his campaigns. Wolseley`s family could not afford to buy him a commission, but he rapidly rose through the ranks on ability alone. He saw action in Burma, India and the Crimea where he met Charles George Gordon – who became his military hero – and he later led the ill-fated expedition to relieve Gordon in Khartoum. Wolseley was wounded three times, losing the sight in his right eye in the Crimea. His experiences in the Second Opium War became the subject of his first book, 'Narrative of the War in China' 1860. In 1870 he led the Red River expedition against the Métis insurgency.
