This scene is set on the outskirts of an Italian town, near the harbour, where groups of men and women are working on different stages of the production of wine. The horseman in the foreground could be the owner of the distant vineyards. This painting evidences the lasting influence of the characteristic representations of subjects of contemporary Italian life by the 'Bamboccianti', a group of Netherlandish artists working in Italy.
