William Marlow had made a tour of France and Italy from 1765 to 1766 and on his return to England he exhibited a large number of paintings of continental scenes. There are several versions of this particular Provençal view and it was presumably painted as a souvenir for a gentleman who had been on the Grand Tour. The subtle treatment of light is characteristic of Marlow's style and here the luminous glow of evening, enhanced by the original oval frame, would have provided an elegant adornment for a Georgian house. By the end of the century demand for continental views diminished, as the wars with France had closed much of Europe to tourists, and Marlow retired to Twickenham.
