This view is to the north, upstream over the Adige, towards the Visconti fortress of Castel San Pietro (destroyed by the French in 1801). To the left is the unfinished brick facade and tower of Sant'Anastasia. At the extreme right is the Palazzo Fioro della Seta, decorated with sixteenth-century frescoes. The wooden shacks are floating flour-mills.

Bellotto emancipated himself from the influence of his uncle and former employer, Canaletto, with his own work before being invited to Dresden in 1747. His views of northern Italy, painted on an immense scale, have an individual tonality and texture. He also painted a view of Verona from the opposite direction as a pendant (pair) to this painting.
