The attribution of this painting has been subject of much debate by scholars over the years. The most up-to-date opinion is that the work could be by John Bouttats (1712–after 1768) and Thomas Chapman (d.1768), since John Bouttats was working on restoring the picture collection at Temple Newsam around the same time as the picture was painted.

John Bouttats (1712–after 1768) was a son of Johann Baptiste Bouttats (c.1680–1743), to whom the painting was recently also attributed. The trace of a signature was found which could be that of Chapman, to whom the painting was previously attributed as the sole author.
