A panoramic view of the city of Nottingham and surrounding countryside as seen from Colwick Hill, to the east of the city centre. The village of Sneinton, almost hidden by trees, is in the middle foreground. The red-brick building on the right is Pierrepont House, apparently the first house in Nottingham to have sash windows (now destroyed). St Mary's Church is the striking white building that can be seen rising from the centre of the town and behind it is the church of St Nicholas. On the hill behind in the middle distance is the castle, now Nottingham Castle Museum, that was built for the 1st Duke of Newcastle between 1644 and 1679. Wollaton Hall can be seen further in the distance on the right. At the foot of the hill below the castle and spanning the River Trent is a bridge with many arches, now destroyed.
