Its position where the River Maas meets the Waal in the south of Holland made Dordrecht the most important Dutch trading centre throughout the Middle Ages. By the time of this painting the city’s wealth had declined but its political power and influence remained. As the oldest town in the province of South Holland, Dordrecht retained political influence. This power is demonstrated in the painting by the imposing towers of the city’s principal buildings. The merchant ship, flying the colours of the Dutch Republic, is somewhat at odds with the smaller vessels of the loggers. This latter feature is seemingly a reference to Dordrecht’s still striving shipbuilding industry. Cuyp dedicated his career to Dordrecht, producing 25 views of his home city.
