This painting was presented to David James, an employee of Scruttons Ltd. He moved from London to Clyde to help set up the Clyde Anchorages Emergency Port in 1940, providing additional berthing facilities for ships whose ports were damaged during the Second World War. Scruttons commissioned a series of paintings of the Emergency Port by the artist Arthur J. W. Burgess to display at their head office.

Arthur J. W. Burgess emigrated from Australia in 1900 and set up home in England. He was commissioned to paint various merchant ships and convoys in ports during the Second World War.
