The view is taken from Wapping Dock, Bristol, today the site of MShed, the museum of Bristol's history. A 32-gun frigate is being towed downriver and the crowded quay on St Augustine's Reach is behind. Nicholas Pocock was born in Bristol and his early career was as a ship's captain, largely spent on voyages to the West Indies and South Carolina. In his late 30s or early 40s he gave up the sea and became a professional artist specialising in marine subjects.
