This painting shows the view from Rutherford's studio on Norfolk Street. Several views of his studio exist. In the foreground, favourite objects sit on the window sill, here a couple of geraniums and a book. Out of the window the people of Hyde go by, chatting or shopping. These paintings are part of Rutherford's domestic life, but also chart his stylistic development which gradually changed from creamy layers of paint, to a lighter and more blocked approach with a chalky appearance.
