Earl Haig has described the genesis of the painting: 'My picture was painted from a watercolour made in Venice in the late 1980s… I was looking towards San Giovanni dei Mendicole (probably the Church of San Nicolo dei Mendicoli) I visited Venice for a number of years… I painted a number of oils and watercolours – the watercolours on the spot and the oils on returning home… This painting is fairly accurate from a topographical point of view – the forms and colours painted freely', Earl Haig 2005.
