Dauzats was born in Bordeaux. His early training was as a theatrical scene painter and designer of lithographic illustrations. He arrived in Paris in 1823 and studied in the studio of the landscape and history painter Julien-Michel Gue. Dauzats’s interests were exceptionally wide ranging, producing paintings from landscapes to architectural images, gaining recognition for his attention to detail and his accurate representation of local colour. This small painting is of a town in Seine-et-Oise, famous for sloping streets, which surround its fifteenth-century gothic church. The painting is a testament to the skill with which Dauzats rapidly captures the essence of a scene. He frames the view with an arch, adding a sense of drama to the composition as the viewer is forced to look downwards towards the church.
