Patrick Heron studied painting in Cornwall and then at the Slade School of Art. In the 1950s he was inspired and influenced by the work of the American Abstract Expressionists, a movement that focused on reflecting emotion through abstract shapes. Heron was interested in creating images rather than creating a subject. He concentrated his efforts on exploring the relationship between spaces of colours. The artist was once quoted as saying ‘to call a painting decorative was one of the highest possible compliments’ because the painting is giving pleasure through every millimetre of its surface.
