This scintillating Venetian view (pendant to P517), with its silvery tonality and short brushstrokes is characteristic of works by Guardi, dateable c.1770s. Guardi here demonstrates his consummate ability to capture fleeting atmospheric effects, enveloping his views in a silver-grey watery haze which blurs the boundaries between water, air and land, thus capturing the essence of the Venetian scene, if not the detail. Both compositions exist in numerous versions.
