In this painting, the artist has chosen to paint two of the most famous landmarks in Venice. He shows us the Customs House, or 'Dogana', designed by Benoni in 1682 and the Church of Santa Maria della Salute, which was erected in 1631–1682 by Longhena in commemoration of the cessation of the plague in 1630. The artist visited Venice in 1834 at the age of 22, staying for two months, and he made many careful sketches in pencil and colour which are wonderful for detail, careful finish and picturesque effect. Muller’s finished Venetian pictures were painted in England from these finished sketches. This view is apparently the one the artist saw every morning from his room in the 'Albergo dell’ Europa'. The composition is based on a pyramid, with the bright cloud above Longhena’s dome catching the eye at the apex, and the darker tones in the shipping on the Grand Canal supplying weight to its base.
