Though Edwin Hitchon thought this painting was by Turner, the view of Bonhams, who advise Hyndburn Borough Council, is that it is not. It is easy to say why it does not look authentic. There is a lack of draughtsmanship in the drawing and the strange brown shapes in the lower left of the composition are not convincing. Also, the bridge looks like a railway bridge; not something you see in Venice.
