Mark Francis came to prominence in the early 1990s among a group known as the 'Young British Artists' (YBAs), which included Damien Hurst, Gary Hume and Sarah Lucas. His work of this early period is a meditation on the human condition and derived from microbiological photography of bacteria, cells and chromosomes.

His paintings are mainly monochromatic and have a smooth, immaculate finish achieved by coating the canvas with a plastic-based medium. In 'Veil' he blurs the black dots by brushing them vertically then horizontally to produce an out of focus image. This for Francis "alludes to a fragile existence and suggests how little we know about ourselves and our place in the cosmos."
