Son of Epstein and Kathleen Garman, Theo was an artist hailed as Epstein’s protégé. He suffered from a mental illness and died tragically young whilst being admitted to hospital. This painting is believed to have been made during the later stages of his illness.

The impact of the work lies in its jungle-like riotous appearance, although this makes the plants difficult to discern. Amongst the tangle of foliage, the bamboo and railings lend the painting a grid-like structure.
