The painting is an unfinished study of a vase of flowers for which Miss Coppin (Emily Stannard) received the Society’s large Gold Medal, honorary class, in the category of an original painting in oil by a lady under 25 years of age. Miss Coppin is mentioned in the Society’s 'Transactions', 1820–1821, and she was an honorary member of Society of Artists, Norwich (1831).
