Cheall began painting landscapes while living on the edge of the North Yorkshire moors in 1986. There he expressed the rocks, weather, light and wide vistas, which remain fundamental to his work. The compositions contrast intimate foreground with infinite horizon. The lack of recognisable objects allows interpretation, illusion of depth, modelling of form and the handling of paint.
