A view of Valentines, in Ilford Essex. This painting depicts Valentines as it would have looked in around 1900. The conservatory was removed after the house was sold in 1912. Valentines was originally built in around 1696 for Elizabeth Tillotson and her family, after the death of her husband, the Archbishop of Canterbury. When the last private resident of Valentines, Sarah Ingleby, died in 1906 the estate was left to her son Holcombe Ingleby. Holcombe Ingleby donated some of the land in his mother’s memory to Ilford Council, and in 1912, sold the remaining land, including the house, to the Council. The conservatory featured in this painting was demolished after the council acquired the house in 1912. Valentines, presently referred to as Valentines Mansion, has been used for many purposes over the years including a hostel for Belgian Refugees (1914), convalescent home for sick and wounded soldiers (1918), temporary children’s hospital (1919), Public Health Department (1925–1965) and Council Housing Department (1965–1993).
